The Official England - Sri Lanka 3rd Test Thread
England v Sri Lanka, 3rd Test, Lord's

June 9-13, 2016
Start time 11am local (1000 GMT)

Form guide
England: WWLWD

Sri Lanka: LLLLW

Teams news
England, unsurprisingly, have opted for an unchanged team. Compton has his chance to shine, Finn keeps Jake Ball waiting once again for a Test debut and Chris Woakes' revelatory pace and incision in Durham means his allrounder's berth remains secure in Ben Stokes' continued absence.

England 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Alex Hales, 3 Nick Compton, 4 Joe Root, 5 James Vince, 6 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Steven Finn, 11 James Anderson

More potential upheaval in Sri Lanka's ranks following an injury in training for Milinda Siriwardana, who faces a late fitness test on an ankle problem. Chaminda Bandara, the uncapped left-arm seamer, may step in while Eranga faces up to his bowling action issues, while Dasun Shanaka could also be considered for a recall. Kusal Perera, back with the squad following the overturning of his drugs ban, is an outside bet to challenge the underperforming Lahiru Thirimanne in the middle order.

Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Dimuth Karunaratne, 2 Kaushal Silva, 3 Kusal Mendis, 4 Dinesh Chandimal (wk), 5 Angelo Mathews (capt), 6 Lahiru Thirimanne, 7 Dasun Shanaka / Milinda Siriwardana, 8 Rangana Herath, 9 Chaminda Bandara, 10 Nuwan Pradeep 11 Suranga Lakmal

Pitch and conditions
Don't look down, look up. Lord's is one of those venues that can be entirely dictated by the weather. The pitch has been flat as a pancake ever since the installation of its now-decade-old drainage system in 2006 - as the riot of recent centuries on its legendary honours boards can attest. However, the ball still hoops around regardless given the right cloud cover, so we'll all have to wait and see. The week is presumed to be dry, but there's humidity in the offing for Thursday morning. Anderson, for one, won't object to that.

If we actually get a few hours, I reckon we can go through them. Just cashed in my draw and put it on an England win. Here's hoping.

I went to Benidorm a few years ago. From thirty yards away you couldn't see the sea because the beach was full of people and umbrellas. Has that changed?

I also recall a tampon floating past me by one of those pontoons moored off the beach. Has the water quality improved?

Weird from England. They didn't seem in much of a hurry until right at the end. Cook and Ali were very slow.

Am in West Hampstead and it's just persistently drizzling at the moment.
Not heavy but constant

Re: The Official England - Sri Lanka 3rd Test Thread
Great little feature by Shane Warne on how to learn to bowl leg spin followed by Mahela Jayawardene on how to play spin.
Sky does these features very well.
Perhaps it should rain more often.

Word is it is just bruising but he won't bat tonight.
No more serious than that.

Is Cook injured or just playing down the order?

Re: The Official England - Sri Lanka 3rd Test Thread
England 55/3 leading by 183
Compton 19, Root 4 & Vince first ball

Compton out for Borthwick seems to be the thinking.
Vince needs to do better but may get a couple of Pakistan Tests.

Root out for 3 & 4 ... I'm guessing that's his worst ever Test match

Compton and Vince are NOT England class.

Re: The Official England - Sri Lanka 3rd Test Thread
Its only the second day of the Test and I think Ali only bowled 8 overs for 20 odd which is probably what you'd expect as the wicket flattens out after any initial life.
Was reading that Scott Borthwick is favourite to replace Compton at 3 and bowl some leg spin.
He played one Test and batted eight while bowling some spin and the article optimistically said he could be the new Steve Smith .... going from leg spinner to specialist batsman.

I know Dr Matt likes the teenage leg spinner Mason Crane but he presumably needs more experience. That would be a bold choice though.
Rashid seems to be out of the picture a bit.
